Revontuli Idols (often stylized as Revontulidols, also known as Reve or Revontulet) is an all-Finnish cast Love Live! chorus group with nine members covering Love Live! School Idol Project, Love Live! Sunshine!! and PERFECT Dream Project songs mainly in Japanese, and in the future, in Finnish as well (occasionally).
The name "Revontuli Idols" comes from the Finnish word "revontuli" (plural "revontulet", lit. "northern light(s)"), and the English word "idols" combined. The name was chosen because Finland is located in the northern part of Europe (between Russia and Sweden), and especially in the very north of Finland, Lapland, you can see the northern lights during winter. And since all the members are from Finland, it was decided that a somewhat "Finnish" group name would be cool.
Just like the original franchise groups, μ's and Aqours, Revontuli Idols has sub-units. Six of them are Revontuli Idols' versions for the original sub-units, and the seventh one is for songs that are not sub-unit nor full-group covered.
Giđđa is Revontuli Idols' Printemps. Due to the original sub-unit name being in French, it was decided that Revontuli Idols' version would be in the Sami language. Just like Printemps, Giđđa means "spring".
Kielot is Revontuli Idols' lily white. "Kielot" (singular "kielo") translates to "Lilies of the Valley", which is also the national flower of Finland.
Pohjantähti is Revontuli Idols' BiBi. "Pohjantähti", literally "North Star", is the Finnish word for Polaris. In Finnish mythology it has been called "The Northern Nail" because it looks like it's the star that holds up the whole sky.
CYRvia! is Revontuli Idols' CYaRon!. The name comes from Sylvia, a girls' name used in Finland and a bunch of other countries.
Alppiruusu is Revontuli Idols' AZALEA. "Alppiruusu" is the Finnish name for rhododendrons, a type of flower bush/tree, which is also what azaleas are. Though rhododendrons themselves are relatively rare in the Finnish nature, in the very north of Lapland one can find Lapland rosebay, a rhododendron species found in subarctic regions around the world.
Brunbergin Suukot is Revontuli Idols' Guilty Kiss. The name comes from a kind of chocolate sold in Finland known as "Suukot" which translates simply to "Kisses". Brunberg is the company that makes these candies and they were previously known as Brunberg's kisses, later shortened to just Kisses.
Jääkristalli is Revontuli Idols' Saint Snow. The literal translation for Jääkristalli is "ice crystal".
As a sub-unit, Jääkristalli is meant to publish flash-covers without any prior notice.
Last but not least, we have Virvatulet (lit. "will-o'-the-wisps"). Will-o'-the-wisp appear in folklore of numerous countries and cultures, Finland included. They are atmospheric ghost lights, described to resemble a flickering lantern or a small flame, that, if approached by travelers, would draw them away from their safe paths.
As a sub-unit, Virvatulet is meant to publish covers with short notice. Mostly meant for special holiday-covers and possible contest-entering, Virvatulet acts similarly to our other sub-units, but with few exceptions, the most notable ones being that there is no permanent member set-up and that the songs can be any song from the whole Love Live! franchise. The participating members are always those, who have the extra time to spare, and who are interested in participating in that specific cover. It also allows our members to collab in smaller groups with each other, to see how they sound, and try out different songs they otherwise probably wouldn't sing (ie. a Pohjantähti/Alppiruusu member singing some other sub-unit's song).
In Virvatulet's covers, we will also script the songs differently to suit that cover's line-up.
